Dr. Megan Johnson McCullough – Even though the brain is only 3 pounds, it is the central command station for all that we do. The human brain has 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion connectors doing constant tasks for us every single second. The right and left sides of the brain do play different roles but are not independent entities. They must collaborate and therefore, if this communication is impaired, there could be some misfunction. It has been said that some people are right-brained, and some are left-brained with dominance being prevalent in how they think and act. The Nobel Prize winner, Roger W. Sperry, is responsible for researching the difference in the brain’s hemispheres.

RIGHT BRAIN The right brain is more intuitive and visual in nature. Therefore, the right side focuses and helps with our imagination, arts, rhythm, daydreaming, and nonverbal cues.

LEFT BRAIN The left brain is tasked to help with mathematics, facts, logic, sequencing, and linear thinking. This side keeps things in order for us and is analytical in nature. It helps us to read, perform computation, and write.

Even though each side of the brain is tasked with certain functions, they’re a team to achieve performance. Input from both sides is necessary. For example, the left side helps with language, but the right side is responsible for understanding the tone and context of the language. The left side might solve the math equation, but the right side translates that information into estimates and comparisons for understanding.

Every person’s brain is wired slightly differently, but there is no 0scientific evidence that truly indicates whether a person is right-brained or left-brained. Our brain needs our help too. We need to stay stimulated and never stop learning. We should read, write, do puzzles, and play games that require memory (like cards). We can even learn new languages and take music lessons for stimulation. Exercise and nutrition ward off dementia. Sleep is critical as well. Whether you are a math lover or arts lover, don’t take for granted all that our brains do for us. We may have our strengths and weaknesses with certain concepts, but that’s where practice and learning come into play. Be your brain’s assistant and advocate for all it does. Everything and everyone can use a little help, so even your brain appreciates the effort to do so.
