Dr. Megan Johnson McCullough – Our personal lives are every day faced with both monotonous parts and parts that cause stress. Life can be a balancing act of staying mentally and physically healthy and in doing so, being able to handle things that can strike out of nowhere. Storms come and pass, but during them, stress riddles life. We can certainly control deterring some stress factors, but sometimes we aren’t even prepared and must 0react accordingly. It’s the reaction that either increases, decreases, or neutralizes our stress levels. Stress comes in all types, and we all are sensitive to triggers. There are more common stress factors. that we can all agree upon that to some degree do in fact cause stress in our lives.

  1. Family – We don’t get to choose who are family members are. We are literally
born into them. Family issues arise and according to the 2021 Stress in America
survey, 75% of people feel that family can cause stress. The root of family stress
can be from one thing or several things all at once such as scheduling with kids
or helping with ageing parents. Siblings can have their dynamics as well.
Childcare and starting a family can be hard. Holidays can be tough between
hosting or travel. Funerals and celebrations arise. Health issues can be troubling.
We can go through periods of closeness and other times not even speak to each
other. Marriages, blended families, and away from one another, all make stress
    come and go.
  2. Finances – We can go through periods of great careers to living paycheck to
paycheck. We can budget and plan but sometimes the unexpected is what hits
us hard. We stress about making ends meet from time to time. Debt and bills
    cause 64% of American stress.
  3. Relationships – We can have healthy relationships and we can those that make
stress rain for us. A person can have mistrust issues, communication problems,
or even poor mental/physical health that causes turmoil. When things go wrong
in a relationship, 68% of Americans say their stress levels rise.
  4. Work – Different jobs present different stressors whether it be at a corporate
level, self-employed, or contract work. Co-workers and customers elevate stress.
The hours and stability of work can be stressful. Other stress can be related to
issues like pay, management, or the conditions you are working in.
  5. Internal feelings – How we perceive ourselves and situations can cause stress.
We might have insecurities, worries, feel depressed, struggle with uncertainty, or
feel hopeless. Internally, we are stressing ourselves out with these thoughts and
emotions. For example, something like the0 Covid pandemic caused stress
because we didn’t know what was going to happen next. Stress is an internal
feeling itself and sometimes we bring more of it upon ourselves with our mindset.
  6. Health – Both mental and physical health can impact our daily lives which can
present stress. This stress can be placed upon us but also stress the people
around us. Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, phobias, and
OCD, can place stress to even make 0simple decisions. Chronic illness and even
acute illnesses 0such as a broken bone can add stress to life. Addiction can also
    wreak havoc upon life.

We want to be stress free as much as we can, but at the same time realize that not all things are controllable in life. How we respond and how we react dictate our associated stress levels to the circumstances presented. Life isn’t predictable and life isn’t easy all the time. Stress does make things worse for us, yet we continue to both self-inflict and let it get the best of us. No one is completely and entirely stress free, but the less we have of it, the better each day feels both internally and externally.
