When I first brought forward the concept of safe parking in January 2022, I was not sure if I would have support. After working with our City staff to address concerns, the Vista City Council approved the launch of a new Safe Parking Program in partnership with Jewish Family Service (JFS). JFS operates five Safe Parking programs throughout San Diego County, making Vista’s operation their sixth. Over 70% of the people they serve are experiencing homelessness for the first time. We know that the financial, psychological, and physical consequences of homelessness increase with the duration or chronicity of homelessness. That is why it is so important that we intervene as soon as possible to ensure that homelessness is only a brief experience with a quick recovery. When someone loses their housing but they have access to a vehicle, this lifesaving asset can keep them from experiencing more dire conditions of street-level homelessness. Oftentimes people will park their car in residential neighborhoods, city parks and facilities, or near local businesses. The City of Vista Safe Parking Program offers security and an opportunity to recover from homelessness by providing case management. The program is expected to be fully operational by August 2023.

Celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day was this past Saturday, April 22nd. There were many wonderful Earth Day celebrations this year, from community clean-ups to a festival at Alta Vista Gardens. I want to take a moment to acknowledge the Vista Farmers Market, as every day is earth day for farmers. I met with Mark Wall, who runs the Vista Farmers Market, and he explained the history and success of our longstanding market. The Vista Farmers Market serves 4,000 customers every Saturday and operates rain or shine! For those looking for fresh produce, handmade goods, beautiful flowers, tasty dishes, and so much more, be sure to visit the Vista Farmers Market this Saturday from 8 am-11 am.
