Cal Poly Wrestling –Kansas City, MO. — Antonio Lorenzo and Bernie Truax earned first-place finishes, leading the Cal Poly wrestling team to a second-place finish in the Tiger Style Invitational on Saturday at Staley High School.
Lorenzo was seeded second and went 3-0 in the tournament with a fall and two decisions. In the finals, he earned an 8-6 sudden victory decision against top-seeded Noah Surtin of Missouri, an NCAA qualifier last March. Lorenzo tallied a takedown 15 seconds into the extra period, his fourth takedown of the bout.
Truax, a two-time NCAA All-American, was seeded No. 1 at 197 pounds and went 3-0 as well with a first-period pin, a 10-2 major decision and, in the finals, a 6-4 decision over Jaxon Smith of Maryland. After a scoreless first period, Truax scored two escapes for a 2-2 tie heading into the final period, in which he notched a pair of takedowns for the win.
Placing second was Dom Demas at 149. The Oklahoma transfer was seeded second and reached the final round with three decisions before falling in a 2-0 decision to top-seeded Brock Mauller of Missouri, surrendering an escape in the second period and riding time.
