Encinitas, CA. — APRIL, 2024 —The Encinitas Chamber of Commerce hosted its final Rising Star of the Month program for the 2023-24 school year Wednesday, April 10, 2024. The Chamber partnered with MiraCosta College, who has hosted and sponsored the monthly breakfasts this school year honoring 32 exceptional seniors from the five local high schools in the San Dieguito Union High School District.

The honorary program recognizes high school students each month who have demonstrated character, integrity, love of learning and involvement in school and community, and/or have overcome challenging life circumstances without compromising their education. All Rising Star students have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship which will be awarded during the Encinitas Chamber’s annual Salute to Education event on May 23rd.

The Encinitas Chamber’s Rising Stars honored April 10th were Angela Aguirre from Canyon Crest Academy, Jina Moon from La Costa Canyon High School, Blake Harris from San Dieguito High School Academy, Kaede Ward from Sunset High School and Marley Wexler from Torrey Pines High School. Their families and local city officials were in attendance, including Encinitas Mayor Tony Kranz, Encinitas Council Member District #3 Joy Lyndes, Shannon Bradley representing Congressman Mike Levin, Matt Rubel representing State Senator Catherine Blakespear, Robson Winter representing Assemblymember Tasha Boerner, Captain Shane Watts from North Coastal Sherriff’s Station, Encinitas Chamber of Commerce CEO Sherry Yardley, Encinitas Chamber of Commerce Board members, MiraCosta Dean Russell Waldon, and San Dieguito Union High School principals and district officials.

“I was so thrilled to have been able to meet Chamber of Commerce members at the Rising Star program,” said Sunset High School student Kaede Ward.  “I didn’t know much about Chamber of Commerce activities before, and realized I needed to know about them since I’m really invested in a local charitable organization which collects excess food from local places (including Jimbo’s and Panera in Encinitas) and delivers to students and homes of needy students nearby.  Making connections in your business community (we help them fulfill SB1383) is key to growing our volunteer organization’s surplus, allowing us to take on more students and families in need.  The connections alone for that last week were amazing and such a resource!”

MiraCosta College is the Rising Star of the Month Event and Breakfast Sponsor. Additional sponsors and donors include The Cottage Encinitas, EDCO, California Coast Credit Union, the Encinitas Rotary Club and Encinitas Historical Society. Gift donors include Broad Street Dough Co.,  The Baked Bear, Chick-fil-A, Cox Communications, Raising Cane’s, Blenders Eyewear, the Red Door Escape Room and the Community Resource Center (CRC).
