New Village Arts Rings In The Holiday Season With Variety of Online Events

CARLSBAD, CA. November 2020 – New Village Arts Theatre (NVA) is announcing a host of family-friendly online offerings for the holiday season, including original work, community events, and partnerships with Kids on Stage and Rubicon Theatre Company.


NVA’s third annual HOLLY JOLLY CABARET goes online this year, streaming from December 14 – 31. Featuring the talents of Natasha Baenisch (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ), Chris Bona (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, AVENUE Q), Kevin “Blax” Burroughs (SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ), Jasmine January (SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ, AVENUE Q), and Patricia Jewel (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS), with Music Direction by JD Dumas (MURDER FOR TWOLITTLE WOMEN), this online event will showcase classic and contemporary holiday songs. HOLLY JOLLY CABARET will also feature a preview of NVA’s upcoming original holiday musical, 1222 OCEANFRONT VIEW: HOME, set to debut on the NVA stage in November 2021.

Tickets for HOLLY JOLLY CABARET are only $10 per household, and can be purchased through December 31. Ticket buyers will have unlimited access to the online cabaret through the end of 2020. For tickets and info, visit: www.newvillagearts.org/holly-jolly


New Village Arts continues its ongoing free film club series, New Village Film Club. In December, moderators Frankie Alicea-Ford and Milena (Sellers) Phillips will be discussing the 1967 Sidney Poitier classic, GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER, as well as the 2005 remake starring Bernie Mac, GUESS WHO. New Village Film Club is a free monthly online event welcome to all.

New Village Film Club will be held on Thursday, December 17, from 5 – 6:30pm via Zoom.

NVA is pleased to announce a partnership with Kids on Stage to present THE TEMPLE & THE SECRET CODE, a forty-five minute, virtual Hanukkah performance and adventure in the comfort of your own home.

Brother and sister team David & Leah, will share stories from their Grandfather’s story book as they help audience members, or junior detectives, solve the secret code to get inside the Temple. The junior detectives will enjoy the story via Zoom and be given clues that they will search for in their house during the Hanukkah adventure.

There is preparation by the parents/guardians that will help ensure our detectives have the clues they need to solve the code with our actors.  Audience size is limited to 10 kids/junior detectives per performance so that our actors can effectively interact with each audience member. It is recommended that patrons purchase tickets with other friends and family on the same show day and time so you can enjoy this exciting Hanukkah story together.

THE TEMPLE & THE SECRET CODE is written by Becky Cherlin Baird (founding artistic director, The JCompany Youth Theatre) and Los Angeles writer Eliza Levy, they are joined by actors Noah Baird and Eliza Levy.  The Zoom Stage Manager for this production is Daniella Camelleri.

Just in time for the holidays, New Village Arts and Rubicon Theatre Company bring audiences a magical musical created with new cutting-edge technology that is sure to become new a holiday tradition – the World Premiere of ESTELLA SCROOGE: A CHRISTMAS CAROL WITH A TWIST! ESTELLA SCROOGE debuts Friday and is available for streaming through the holidays.

The production features a cast of 24 award-winning Broadway notables, and is the creation of John Caird, (the Tony and Olivier Award-winning director of Les Misérables and Nicholas Nickleby), and Tony Award nominee Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice).

The story follows Estella Scrooge, a modern-day Wall Street tycoon with a penchant for foreclosing. A hotelier in her hometown of Pickwick, Ohio has defaulted on his mortgage and Estella fancies the idea of lowering the boom personally. Arriving at Harthouse on Christmas Eve, Estella discovers that the defaulting party is her childhood friend Pip Nickleby. A good and generous soul, Pip has transformed the property into a refuge for the sick, dispossessed and homeless. A freak snowstorm forces Estella to take refuge. That night, just as it happened to her ancestor Ebenezer, she is haunted by three visitations… and oh, what uninvited houseguests they are!

A modern day take on Charles Dickens’ beloved 1843 novella, A Christmas CarolESTELLA SCROOGE also wittily incorporates characters and plot lines from Dickens’ other great novels, Great ExpectationsLittle Dorrit and Bleak House, among others.

ESTELLA SCROOGE is the first digital theatre piece filmed entirely during the pandemic, utilizing cutting-edge technology. The fully realized production, a dazzlingly cinematic musical theatre adventure, was filmed using tracked green screen techniques, with 3-D surreal digital environments created in post-production merged with the actual footage of the actors to bring the story to life in a brand-new way.
