Of Voter Service with Kick-Off to Voting Season Event

CARLSBAD, CA – September, 2022 – The League of Women Voters North County San Diego (LWVNCSD) is inviting the public to celebrate its proud 60-year history in North County with a birthday celebration and Kick-off to Voting Season event on September 17, 10:30am to 12:30pm, at the Encinitas Public Library Community Room and Ocean-View deck.

In 1962, a group of women committed to defending democracy came together to form what was then called the League of Women Voters of San Dieguito, serving parts of Del Mar and the unincorporated communities of Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas, Leucadia and Olivenhain. Eventually, the League’s jurisdiction was extended to include all of North County and the name was changed to League of Women Voters North County San Diego (LWVNCSD).

According to past LWVNCSD presidents, Joyce Joseph and Veronica Seay, our League’s mission has remained constant: advocating on important issues and providing voter service. Joseph remembers how valuable The VOTER newsletter was in the 80s when it was the primary way to communicate with members. Before the internet, mobile phones, texts or ZOOM, The VOTER was the single source of information for keeping members informed about League issues, priorities and action, both locally, statewide and nationally.

LWVNCSD past president Charlotte Gumbrell recalls learning about LWVNCSD in the early 1960’s when her boss, the Superintendent of San Dieguito Union High School District, asked her to contact the League for assistance in resisting censorship of books in our local schools. Charlotte was so impressed with how LWVNCSD members spoke of first amendment rights and successfully defended the District’s decision to not ban books that she became a member. Adding to the happy ending, Charlotte later married that Superintendent.

The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 after the U.S. Constitution was amended to grant women the right to vote. Over time, the League’s priorities changed to reflect the needs of society and address critical issues. The organization remains true to its basic purpose, to make democracy work for all citizens.

Located at the Encinitas Library, 540 Cornish Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024, the kick-off event will feature information on new voting districts, candidate forums for local elections, ballot propositions, participation of the San Diego County Registrar of Voters and much more. There is no charge to attend and no reservations are required. North County residents are encouraged to come early for free goodies.
