Not Your Grandma’s Quilts will be showing at the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe’s Art Gallery on November 5 and close on January 2, 2016quiltcollage

After joining the 300-member El Camino Quilters Guild, nine women yearned for a smaller group with an art quilt focus, so they formed the Connections friendship group. Today these nine fiber artists meet monthly to share ideas and techniques, to resolve questions, make positive suggestions on current work, and support and encourage each other.

In years past they’ve contributed to their communities by creating award-winning fiber art and donating their work to community organizations. In 2014 the group created a seven-panel underwater piece, which they donated to the San Diego Coastkeepers fundraising art auction. This year these artists created and donated a garden-inspired permanent installation to the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens in Vista.

Their upcoming exhibit, Not Your Grandma’s Quilt, will open at the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe’s Art Gallery on November 5 and close on January 2, 2016. The exhibit represents the members’ work over several years and illustrates a variety of techniques. Visitors will see how the group members incorporate fabric painting, photo interpretation, monoprinting, beading, embroidery, and many other artistic approaches into their work.

Exhibit viewers will be amazed, enlightened, and convinced that the quilts created by the Connections women are Not Your Grandma’s Quilts as they get a new idea of what the terms art quilts and fiber art mean to today’s fabric artists. The group’s Artists’ Reception will be held on December 6 from 1:00 to 3:00 in conjunction with the Vista Community Clinic’s 29th Annual Holiday Homes Tour.

In honor of the holiday season the Connections members challenged themselves to create pieces to illustrate Christmas carols specifically for this exhibit. Many of the group’s large and small art pieces will be available for purchase along with artist-created holiday ornaments.

The Connections friendship group members are currently creating new art pieces based on Georgia O’Keeffe’s early works from the 1920s. These will be part of the El Camino Quilters Guild Show in April 15–16, 2016 at the QLN Conference Center in Oceanside—along with more traditional quilts like those your grandmother may have made!
