Oceanside, CA -Join us in welcoming photojournalist Omer Khan on Saturday, January 14 at 3:00 p.m. in the Civic Center Library Community Rooms at 330 North Coast Hwy. in Oceanside. Afifa Zaman, a MiraCosta College counselor, educator, and active member of the Afghan-American community in Oceanside will lead a discussion with Omer Khan about his work as a photographer in his home country of Afghanistan and his experiences as a resettled Afghan in San Diego.

Omer was born in Kabul, graduated from university with a degree in journalism and was an accomplished photojournalist in Afghanistan until he was forced to flee in 2021 with his wife and child and relocated to San Diego. While working in Afghanistan he used his photography to “communicate across languages and cultures” and “capture the positive and beautiful side of Afghanistan.” He has since shown work at John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as part of ‘A Safe Space to Create’ and more shows are in the works.

Oceanside Public Library is excited to display Omer Khan’s photographs of Afghanistan at the Oceanside Civic Center Library through January 27, and then at Mission Branch Library at 3861 Mission Ave through March 10.

Over thirty years ago, Afifa Zaman’s family resettled in Oceanside, CA. after a long refugee journey seeking safety from the ongoing violence in Afghanistan. She is still a proud resident of North County San Diego serving the local community as a counseling faculty member at MiraCosta College. Afifa is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership at the University of Southern California and serves as an educational consultant for Uplift Afghanistan Fund, a nonprofit organization that supports grassroots redevelopment efforts in Afghanistan.

Support for this program is provided by The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library. The Oceanside Public Library aims to empower the community by promoting literacy, information access, civic engagement, cultural inclusiveness and openness to new ideas.
