Sacramento, CA — The Palomar College Softball Team (Team 45) was named the 2022-23 3C2A Scholar Team of the Year. This is the first award for the program and the school’s sixth overall. In addition to the team award, All-American pitcher India Caldwell, who has transferred to the University of California, San Diego, was named to the 2022-23 Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.

“Being named the 3C2A Scholar Team is such an honor,” Head Coach Lacey Craft said. “We had an amazing softball season on the field last year, but it’s more valuable to be recognized for their academic achievement.”

The Scholar Team Award is the highest academic team achievement given annually by the 3C2A. All team members must have excelled academically with a total GPA of 3.0 or higher. The team should have demonstrated better-than-average accomplishments in intercollegiate athletic competition.

Eight Comets were named to the All-State Academic Team in the spring for their hard work in the classroom and were honored during the 2023 3C2A State Tournament Awards Ceremony. Only sophomores were eligible for the individual award.

As a whole, the Athletics Department places a heavy emphasis on student-athlete success in the classroom and the academic counselors within the department work closely with the students to help make sure they are the best versions of themselves.

Melissa Allen and Amber Slivick always go above and beyond for the student-athletes, including answering the phone and emails on the weekends and scheduling Zoom calls. They help the student-athletes work out their schedules, coordinate grade checks and follow up with referrals.

In addition to the academic success team, the softball team conducts study hall, in which assistant coach Megan Wachholtz coordinates. During study hall, the team can ask for assistance with tutoring and other resources available to them on campus and Wachholtz helps empower them to communicate with profressors and take ownership of their academic success.

The team’s accomplishments will be acknowledged during the 3C2A Scholar-Athlete Luncheon at 12pm on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. The event is part of our annual 3C2A Convention, which will be held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Sacramento.

“Team 45 proved that you can be great athletes and students at the same time. I’m so proud of what they accomplished on the field and in the classroom during their time here at Palomar – but more proud of what they are continuing to accomplish beyond this program,” Craft said.
