Patio Playhouse Community Theater proudly presents Hedwig and the Angry Inch with text by John Cameron Mitchell, music and lyrics by Stephen Trask
Escondido, CA – (January, 2021) Patio Playhouse Community Theater is proud to present Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a rock musical with text by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. This award-winning smash hit cult favorite tells follows Hedwig Schmidt, an “internationally ignored song stylist” and genderqueer East German rock ‘n’ roll star touring the United States with her band, The Angry Inch. As the show progresses, the audience gets to know Hedwig (nee Hansel) and their journey of leaving East Berlin with American GI love Luther… on the condition that he undergoes a sex change operation. When it, unfortunately, is bungled, leaving her with just “an angry inch,” Hedwig finds herself abandoned at a trailer park in Kansas, where she meets Tommy, the musician who steals her heart… and her songs. Tommy achieves rock star status and takes off on a world tour and Hedwig finds herself again shoved aside. Unwilling to rest with this fate, she does the best thing she can think of… stalking his tour and performing in T.G.I. Fridays adjacent to Tommy’s performance venues. The show follows Hedwig and her husband, Yitzhak and is an exploration of identity and personal power.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch stars dual casts, featuring Amanda Blair as Hedwig and Kailey Agpaoa as Yitzhak, and Shaun Lim as Hedwig and Alex Lee as Yitzhak on alternating weekends, along with a talented band: Jerrica Ignacio as Skszp (Piano), Matt FitzGerald as Jacek (Bass), Andrew Snyder as Krzyzhtoff (Guitar), and Chris Potente as Schlatko (Drums). Audiences will thrill at this wickedly funny, fourth-wall-smashing rock musical, capturing the story of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage in one innovative, energetic, and heartbreaking package.
