The presentation will cover the history of the U.S. environmental movement—focusing on the key people who forged our understanding of how human activities have simultaneously impacted and protected our natural surroundings. This talk is based on their book, Protecting the Planet: Environmental Champions from Conservation to Climate Change. Much of their information about current environmental champions, scientists, researchers, activists, artists, and celebrities, is based on personal interviews. Our speakers will share a set of actionable strategies, demonstrating that there are good reasons to hope that we can achieve a sustainable lifestyle, protect our planet as our home, and ensure the future for our children.

A Professional Wetland Scientist (Emeritus) and Wildlife Biologist, Budd Titlow is an award-winning nature photographer and a widely published writer/author currently living in north Pacific Beach, California. He has authored four books, including PROTECTING THE PLANET—Environmental Champions from Conservation to Climate, BIRD BRAINS—Inside the Strange Minds of Our Fine Feathered Friends, and SEASHELLS—Jewels from the Ocean. Budd has also published 300 magazine/newspaper photo-essays and 5,000 photographs. Most recently, he has taught at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California and is on the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s (OLLI) presenters’ list at UC San Diego. He is currently a member of San Diego Audubon’s Conservation Commission and Nancy Casady’s Campaign for Congress. A summary of Budd’s work is featured on his web site (www.buddtitlow.com)

Mariah Tinger has been devoted to nature ever since she could say “out(side).” Her first environmental hero was her father; as adults, they have conspired together to celebrate national environmental heroes. Mariah began her in-depth studies of climate change while pursuing a master’s degree in environmental management at Harvard University’s Extension School. When she is not researching or writing about climate crisis issues, she is chasing her children or a faster marathon time in the Boston Marathon. She also teaches environmental science/management at Boston University’s School of Business and The Brookwood School in Manchester, Massachusetts
