Paige Torres…On Saturday, February 20th, the San Diego Humane Society hosted the Walk for Animals at Kit Carson Park in Escondido. At the event, local citizens were able to bring their furry friends out to walk and raise funds for a great cause while enjoying live music, exercise, vendors and even a pancake breakfast.
The event kicked off with a pancake breakfast around 8 a.m., where participants and their animals were greeted with a breakfast of handmade pancakes and coffee donated from Starbucks for the fundraiser. The walk then began on the park trails at 9 a.m., with over 1000 registered happy participants rushing along the paths to the finish line, cheered on by their peers and more than 300 volunteers along the way! Some of the dogs and their owners were even arranged into teams, such as the top fundraising team, a group of Corgis named Team Low Rider.

Once all the dogs reached the finish line, the event was far from over. Back at the mainstage, pancakes continued to be served and live music kept the crowd happy and dancing, while booths set up around the main event area provided complimentary gifts such as frisbees, balls, and leashes for the dogs to enjoy.
There was also an arts and crafts station, and an activity center for animals to socialize and have fun running through a puzzle maze. In addition to these fun activities, many of the rescue organizations with booths at the event provided a reminder for what the event stands for: helping animals. Other notable businesses and organizations supporting the event and the animals there included CW 6, Petco, and California Coast.
After participants were able to relax and enjoy themselves after the long walk, the event ended at 12 p.m., with proceeds of over $90,000 raised to go towards the San Diego Humane Society’s day to day operations, behavioral training, food, and other animal services. As Humane Society worker summarized the significance of the successful day, “It’s important to get the community together because we all love animals and it’s great to be able to unite for a common cause.”
