Serving Seniors
Deputies deliver meals to seniors. One in 14 seniors face the challenge of putting food on the table.

San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Deputies are helping to raise awareness about senior hunger and deliver warm meals to people who are homebound.

Deputies took part in the Meals on Wheels Community Champions Week from March 7 to 11. To watch a video, click on the image below.

Deputies made deliveries to Meals on Wheels clients in Alpine, Del Mar, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, Fallbrook, Lakeside, Ramona, Rancho San Diego, Santee, Solana Beach, Spring Valley, Valley Center and Vista.

Meals on Wheels provide nearly 2,000 meals per day to seniors and veterans with disabilities in the county who are unable to prepare meals for themselves.  During Champions Week, deputies also checked in on the seniors’ welfare so they can stay happy, healthy, independent and well-nourished.

Acting Sheriff Kelly Martinez says volunteering for Meals on Wheels is a great way to supplement our You Are Not Alone (YANA) Program and take care of our seniors. “To partner in the community with Meals on Wheels is a terrific way for our deputies and staff to know who is in our community and better connect with them to keep them safe.”

We want our elderly and shut-in seniors to know they are never alone. The Sheriff’s You Are Not Alone (YANA) Program checks on the welfare of the participants through phone calls and weekly visits . Sheriff’s Senior Volunteers provide this free service. Some Sheriff’s Stations and Substations offer birthday and holiday visits with gift baskets. To enroll, click here
