The City of San Marcos was recently recognized as one of the safest college towns in America by SafeWise!

After ranking #50 in 2021, San Marcos made an impressive jump to #35 in the 2022 report. As the education hub of North County, we are committed to collaborating with the eight higher education institutions within our city to enhance educational assets and opportunities for our community.

SafeWise analyzed city data on crime and population to determine the top 50 safest college towns. To be considered for the ranking, only cities with over 15,000 residents and an accredited college that offered four-year degrees qualified. For-profit institutions, technical and vocational schools, schools that offer only two-year degrees and those with fewer than 2,000 students enrolled annually were excluded.

The City of San Marcos is proud to boast one of the lowest crime rates in San Diego County, and we are honored to be ranked once again in SafeWise’s Safest College Towns report. Thank you to our community for making San Marcos a premier destination for education and safety.

“Public safety is a top priority in all City operations and programs” said San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones. “We are dedicated to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment so our community can continue to thrive.”

We appreciate California State University San Marcos for partnering with us on campus and community services to support an optimal learning environment. “It is wonderful to see the City of San Marcos acknowledged as one of the Safest College Towns in the United States.

I appreciate the partnership across the city and our region that supports a thriving and welcoming community for all,” said California State University San Marcos President Ellen Neufeldt.

Job-Readiness Program Launched In North County

This pilot program is designed to connect entry-level, excluded, and/or vulnerable workers with basic skills training and connections to key North County employers who are hiring for office administration, manufacturing, hospitality & food service jobs. It is free for candidates and businesses to participate. We only ask that employers who participate in this program guarantee a job interview for candidates.

How it WorksThe cities of Carlsbad, Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos, and Vista have partnered with several amazing organizations to bring this program forward.

– Lightcast – a labor market analytics firm – identifies key North County industries that are hiring and the skillset needed to work in those industries.

– Bendable – an online course curator from the Drucker Institute – provides customized training pathways for those key industries and tracks progress.North County Libraries provide access to those training pathways at Library locations across North County and online.

– North County Business Organizations – The Carlsbad, Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos, and Vista Chambers of Commerce and the San Diego North EDC are engaging

– North County employers in this program and help connect candidates with businesses and interviews.

Candidates commit to utilizing these services to take 15-20 hours of self-paced online skills training in office administration, manufacturing, hospitality & food service. Upon completion, they receive a micro-credential and are flagged for our business organizations to make introductions to North County employers.

Value to North County Employers
Employers have told us how difficult it is to find entry level workers, especially in this tight labor market. The Job-Readiness Room provides candidates, who for whatever reason may have had difficulty finding work, with 15-20 hours of basic skills training and connectivity to employers who are struggling to find workers. This gives North County employers in key industries access to workers they may not have previously considered, at no cost.

There is no obligation to hire a candidate through the Job-Readiness Room. But we do ask that employers who participate have entry-level jobs available and guarantee to provide interviews for a limited number of candidates. Employers can also opt-in to providing feedback and tracking the success of candidates that come to them via the Job-Readiness Room. Sign Up Here To Participate
