17 year old bicyclist transported to Palomar Medical Center

On December 15, 2021, at approximately 5:18 pm, deputies assigned to the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station Traffic Division responded to a major injury collision at the intersection of San Elijo Road and Elfin Forrest Road, in the city of San Marcos.

During the preliminary investigation, deputies learned a 17 year-old male, was riding an “e-bike” southbound on San Elijo Road in the bike lane. An Amazon delivery van was traveling westbound on Elfin Forrest Road. The bicyclist collided with the van in the intersection and was subsequently ejected from the e-bike. The bicyclist was transported by San Marcos Fire Department Paramedics to Palomar Hospital.  The bicyclist suffered major injuries and is in critical condition, but expected to survive.

Investigators closed the intersection for approximately two and a half hours while the collision investigation was conducted.  Although the investigation is not yet complete, preliminary information indicates the bicyclist may have failed to stop for a red light, prior to entering the intersection when the collision occurred.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or captured the incident on video is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Sean Dwyer
