San Marcos Hike-Join us for the Sunset Trail/Lake San Marcos Overlook hike. A series of winding ascents and descents will go from the bottom of the Sunset Trail to the top of the Lake San Marcos Trail and back. Hard-to-spot views of the south end of Lake San Marcos included! This hike is 3.1-miles with approximately 430 feet of elevation gain and rated Strenuous.

Family Night Craft Pick-upDriftwood Wind Chimes

Create your very own wind chime using driftwood, string, beads and bells. Hang it outside or give as a gift for Mother’s Day!

Family Night activities bring families together. Crafts/activities are intended for children ages three to ten. Each On-The-Go kit contains one craft or activity. Adjust quantity when registering for each child participating.

Star Walk XXIII Enjoy a night under the stars and learn basic astronomy concepts at a beginner’s level. Locate and understand featured celestial/astronomical events. Locate and identify common Constellations and Asterisms.

Viewing the Planets: Venus and Mars; Lions, Dragons, and Bears, Oh My! – Spring Constellations; Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower, and a “New Moon.”

Recommended Equipment: LED flashlight with red filter or red lens cover, Binoculars, Warm clothes, Blanket and/or ground cloth.

Red, White and BOOM! San Marcos hosts one of the most spirited 4th of July Celebrations in North County. This year’s festivities will include carnival games, jumpers and food sales on-site. Guests should plan to bring beach chairs or blankets for lawn seating. The fireworks display is funded entirely by donations from the businesses and citizens of San Marcos. Last year’s donations are being rolled over to help fund this year’s show. An additional $15,000 is needed to fund the show. To make a donation, please visit the link below.

Please note: if the projected high temperature for the day is below 60°F, or there is thunder and lightning, open Rec Swim will be cancelled that day. We will remain open during rain.

Recreation Scholarships Available!

The Friends of San Marcos Parks & Recreation have donated $10,000 this for recreation scholarships! These scholarships are available through the City of San Marcos Parks & Recreation and are contingent upon meeting certain financial eligibility requirements. To learn more and to apply visit

Park Shelter Reservations Available

The City has 21 designated reservable park picnic shelters at 12 different City parks that may be reserved to host your next celebration. A reservation must be made for groups of 25 people or more and groups who wish to have a inflatable or pony/petting zoo. Groups under 25 people can still make a reservation or choose to use the park on a first come first serve basis.

Reservable park picnic shelters can be reserved online a minimum of 8 days in advance and at the Parks and Recreation office 4 days in advance of your desired date. Reservations are paid in full at the time of booking.   For more information, please visit www.san-marcos.net/reserveapark or call the office at 760-744-9000.
