Scripps Ranch Theatre opens their 43rd Season with their production of The Outsider by Paul Slate Smith, running at their theatre on the campus of Alliant Int’l University. This insightfully witty political satire is directed by renowned San Diego director, Christopher Williams. It previews on Friday, September 16th, opens Saturday, September 17th and runs through October 9th; Fridays and Saturdays 8pm, Sundays at 2pm.
Williams shared “I’m thrilled to share Paul Slade Smith’s hilarious play with the Scripps Ranch community. We have an extremely talented group of artists on both sides of the stage to give you a peek into our current voting process through a very comical lens. This play is chalked full of all the elements that make a great comedy: witty dialogue, characters under extreme pressures, sight gags, and all the “isn’t that the truth” moments. I’ve had the pleasure of working on Smith’s plays before, including The Outsider, and I can guarantee that audiences will be howling with laughter at the lovely chaos in the poor governor’s office. But while the play pokes fun at all of us, on both sides of the aisle, it always illuminates how lucky we are as Americans to have the responsibility of choosing our leaders…even when, sometimes, the choices are completely absurd.“
In the midst of a political scandal, Ned Newley, the ultimate policy nerd, is unexpectedly thrust into the position of Governor. He’s terrified of public speaking and his poll numbers are impressively bad. To his ever-supportive Chief of Staff, Ned seems destined to fail. But political consultant, Arthur Vance, sees things differently. Ned might be the worst candidate to ever run for office. Unless the public is looking for… the worst candidate to ever run for office.
At once a razor-sharp satire and an inspirational tribute to democracy, The Outsider is a timely and hilarious send-up of modern American politics that both skewers politics and celebrates democracy.
The cast includes the following talented San Diego actors:
- Deborah Dodaro Paige Caldwell
- Adam Daniel Dave Riley
- Michelle Marie Trester Louise Peakes
- Robert May Ned Newley
- John Nutten Arthur Vance
- Leigh Akin Rachel Parsons
- Walter Murray AC Petersen
