Sacramento, CA -In response to Governor Newsom’s hand-selected members of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approving a new $24.15 fixed charge for SDG&E, PG&E, and SCE customers, Leader Jones issued the following statement:

“It’s blatantly clear that Governor Newsom’s Public Utilities Commission is out of touch with the struggles of ordinary Californians. Their rubber-stamp approval to add a new $24.15 per month electricity charge is unfair and unjust. Even worse, thanks to Democrat lawmakers, the Commission now has the power to jack up this fee whenever they please—$24 today could easily be $100 next year. The Newsom Administration should hang their heads in shame for imposing this heavy burden on already struggling Californians who are barely making ends meet. Now is not the time for more government-mandated fees!”

Leader Jones has been a trailblazer in fighting this fixed charge. This week, the San Diego Union-Tribune published an op-ed by Leader Jones in which he expressed his concerns about the unfair fixed charge and urged the CPUC to reject it. Earlier this year, Leader Jones introduced the Cost of Living Reduction Act, which sought to repeal the mandate for this new fixed charge. Democrats on the Senate Energy Committee killed the measure, despite thousands of Californians across the state who signed the petition in support of the measure.

Senator Brian W. Jones represents the 40th Senate District which includes the Cities of Escondido, Poway, San Marcos, Santee, San Diego City communities of Carmel Mountain Ranch, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Scripps Ranch, Sorrento Valley, and University City, along with the San Diego County unincorporated communities of 4S Ranch, Alpine, Bonsall, Fallbrook, Lakeside, Pine Valley, Rainbow, Ramona, and Valley Center.
