ANNUAL REPORT 2020‐2021
South Vista Communities has continued its work to preserve and improve the quality of life for all residents in neighborhoods south of the 78. By providing a forum for those interested in sharing their concerns, we are able to work together to make a difference in our community.

SVC is a non-profit corporation and any contribution is tax-deductible.

We recognize the elected and appointed officials of the City of Vista as valuable and essential partners in accomplishing common goals; we work closely with them and appreciate their interest and assistance.

Looking back over this year, we regret not being able to host our community meetings but hope
they can begin before long.

We have lent our strong support to two actions which will improve our quality of life and the health of our environment:

 The ban of single-use plastic products, including Styrofoam containers, in a phased-in plan which was approved by the Vista City Council on June 22.

 San Diego County Supervisors rescinded the 2018 approval of the McClellan Palomar Airport Master Plan Update on May 5, a victory for the lawsuit brought by Citizens for a Friendly Airport (C4FA). Many Vista residents have suffered for years from the noisy airplane overflights.

We will continue to monitor development proposals for 1205 Melrose Way and 650 Sycamore Avenue (former Burlington site). Some updates from Community Development Director John Conley:

 Burlington owner is preparing conceptual architectural plans to submit for staff’s review, but we have not received anything since the preliminary drawings that were shown at the Council meeting.

 The Marriott developer (780 Shadowridge) is still waiting to submit construction plans, so we are hoping it moves forward, no change at this point. The entitlement is valid for 3 years.

 The developer for the hotel project on S. Melrose walked… the property owner is still looking for another developer that will build the hotel, but nothing yet. This is also valid for 3 years.

Our thanks to all of you — our members and residents and businesses — for your interest in keeping South Vista a vibrant place in which to live and conduct business, and for your help and participation in making that happen.

A NEW DAY FOR ALL OF US
It’s a new day, the lockdown has been lifted and things are getting back to normal. We can see this by the traffic each day, indoor dining, and gathering.

However, we are not out of the woods yet. We now have the Delta variant that stated in sometime in April and has made its way to California. We are seeing Covid-19 cases rise again and last week In LA county, they saw a 500% increase according to the LA Times.

What is significant is that 99% of those who have tested positive are those who have not been vaccinated. This tells us that it is critical to get vaccinated and keep yourself, you family, and your neighbors well. Vaccines are for those 12 years and older, are readily available, free and no appointment is needed. We’ve overcome the most difficult time by being good neighbors and amazing humans, let’s get to the other side by continuing to do the same.

Wishing everyone a safe and healthy summer. Let’s do our part and please stay safe!
With best regards,
Tazheen Nizam, President

City Announces Reopening of Senior Center in Late Summer
The City’s Senior Center will be reopening in August/September of this year. The specific time will be announced at a later date.

While the City is aware of the State of California’s reopening plan on June 15, additional time will be needed to fill vacant positions due to a reduction in force as a result of COVID-19 pandemic. The Center will continue providing meal pickup and deliveries and Friday weekend bags, and Outand-About transportation.

The City and Senior Center staff look forward to the reopening in a few months and ask the public to understand the delay in reopening is to ensure the Center is reopened safely and responsibly. Read more here about how the City is preparing to reopen the Senior Center.

NEW MEDIANS FOR SYCAMORE
Thanks to Vista’s Public Works Dept., handsome new medians have been installed north and south of where SR 78 crosses over Sycamore Avenue.

The new median plantings are in concert with lovely new plantings in our downtown. Many thanks to Kuna Muthusamy and the Public Works Department!
