Yesterday, I stood alongside staff at the Joe and Mary Mottino Family YMCA in Oceanside to announce free swimming lessons in North County!

Earlier this week, I proposed to allocate part of our American Rescue Plan Act funds to provide free swimming lessons to those in San Diego County. I’m pleased to say that my colleagues agreed and we opened up the application!
Within 12 hours, all 100 spots filled up, which is great to see everyone taking advantage of this opportunity. With so much demand, my office is now working with the YMCA on making 200 more spots available to everyone in North County!

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 79% of children in households with incomes less than $50,000 have little-to-no swimming ability. In California, drowning is a leading cause of injury-related deaths among children under the age of five.
Drowning deaths are preventable, but it starts with learning the basics. I truly hope that everyone takes advantage of this grant, so we can save lives.
