While there are many layers to homelessness, one group I’m focused on preventing from becoming the next in line is seniors. Inflation and rising utility prices are crushing seniors on fixed income and we don’t want our seniors being priced out and ending up on the street.

Last year, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to establish a rental subsidy pilot program for seniors who are at risk of becoming homeless. Check out the flyer below for all the details.

The senior Shallow Subsidy Pilot Program is designed to improve housing stability for low-income older adults who, without financial assistance, may be at risk of losing their housing. The program will serve approximately 220 households by providing a $500 monthly subsidy over a period of 18 months.

To join the application list, email HSEC.OHS-HHSA@sdcounty.ca.gov or by calling 619-980-4168. Application packets will then be sent to those on the list.

Pump Pod

We know the threat of a fire is constant in San Diego County. While we’ve been fortunate that no major fires have broken out in the last few years, we must continue to invest in tools to keep us safe!

Last year, we allocated part of our Neighborhood Reinvestment Program budget to the North County Fire Protection District for a Pump Pod. This week, we got to see it in action!

A Pump-Pod is a self-contained unit that recirculates water used during firefighter training and pump testing. These units allow fire departments to train with the use of full-flow water, without wasting the communities’ water supply. A unit can pump 2,000 gallons of water continually.
