David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer-The last time the UCLA Bruins appeared in their last Holiday Bowl was in 2012 under former head coach Jim Mora, Jr, where they were defeated by the Baylor Bears 49-26 at SDCCU Stadium.
In 2017, Chip Kelly with a lot of college and pro experience was named head football coach at UCLA and guided the Bruins to their last bowl appearance in 2017 where they lost to Kansas State in the Cactus Bowl in Phoenix, AZ by a 40-35 score.
The Bruins suffered through 4 losing seasons. 2017 6-7, 2018 3-9, 2019 4-8 2020 3-4. and for the first time in 7 years this is Chip Kelly’s first winning season their last winning season was 8-5 in 2015 and defeated the Wildcats of Kansas State by a 40-35 score in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, TX. Bowl Total record of 16-19.
For San Marcos Knight fans Kyle Phillips will be a part of the UCLA players that will be competing in the Holiday Bowl has started for 3 years at wide receiver. The Knight alum was named 2nd team all PAC 12 and currently leads the Bruins with 707 yards receiving along with 8 touchdowns. Punt Returns 8 returns for 203 yards and 1 touchdown.
