Oceanside, CA –Three Mira Costa College students were distinguished as recipients of the first Ernie Pyle Scholarships by the Veterans’ Writing Group of San Diego. The cash awards went to Tyler Adams, Trisha Colin and Telly Solomon.

Ernie Pyle was a Pulitzer Prize winning war correspondent whose stories during WW II reached the hearts of millions of Americans and made the realities of war vibrantly clear to the folks at home by sharing life on the battlefield with the common soldiers, sailors and airmen. From the war in Europe, Ernie then went to Asia where he was killed in the battle for Okinawa.

The Veterans’ Writing Group of San Diego is a collection of former service members of all ages, branches of the military, and times of service who are learning to write, improving their story development, or sharing their writing skills with each other in hopes of telling stories, be it for their families or publishing them to share with the world. The Writers have recently completed their fourth book “At Ease: now that I have time to think about it”, and presented the scholarship awards at their book launch February 26th at the Veterans Association of North County. The book includes essays from the three honored students as well as 32 other authors. Sales of the books enables the Veterans’ Writing Group to donate free books to veterans in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics.

Tyler Adams was a signals operator and analyst in the Marine Corps and served in Afghanistan. While studying at MiraCosta he also is a service technician in building automation services and hope to earn his degree in electrical engineering.

Trisha Colin is a Marine recruiter in Southern California. She also served in Afghanistan in the military police and wants to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Telly Solomon is another Marine who wants to pursue a masters degree in supply chain management when his tour of duty is complete.

Randy Davis, a college English instructor to all three MiraCosta students, was present to applaud their efforts and to share in their abilities to tell compelling stories.
