Soroptimist International of Vista hosted three ovarian cancer survivors from The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of San Diego’s H.E.A.R. program at their August lunch meeting in San Marcos. The topic was “Ovarian Cancer: If only I knew then what I know now.” H.E.A.R. stands for Hope, Experiences, Awareness, and Risks. H.E.A.R. recently received a $10,000 grant from another Soroptimist club in Coronado to expand their speaking program. “Our hope is that women will benefit from experiences and the knowledge we have gained from our personal cancer journeys,” said Cindy Silver, a 7-year survivor of Stage IV ovarian cancer (seated, second from left). The group emphasized that women need to be aware of their bodies, know the symptoms and risk factors, and be their own advocates to get care in a timely fashion, because doctors sometimes misdiagnose and dismiss symptoms, until it is too late. The Club meets at 12 noon every first Friday in Vista and every third Friday in San Marcos. For more information visit soroptimistvista.org or email sivista@soroptimist.net.
