A record breaking heatwave couldn’t keep event goers from visiting the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum this past weekend. The AGSE is one of Vista’s best entertainment values. People come from all over the Southland to enjoy all the various activities and exhibits that include Blacksmithing & Wheelwright Demonstrations; Weaving & Spinning Demonstration; Running Tractors & Engines Displays; N’ Scale Model Railroad Exhibit; Horology Exhibit; Working Grist Mill; Country Kitchen; Sewing Demonstrations; hands on kids activities; Wagon & Miniature Train Rides.

On four weekends a year the Museum takes it up several notches to present the Antique Engine & Tractor Show (June) and the Fall Antique Engine & Tractor Show. There are daily tractor parades at these shows led by the Young Marines of North San Diego and featuring tractors from all over the country. Last Saturday and Sunday visitors were treated to two special events. The San Diego North County Mini Maker Faire and the newly arrived West Coast Clock and Watch Museum.

The Mini Maker Faire had something for everyone. Some of the exhibits and activities included Solar Cookers, Cigar Box Guitars, Steampunk Costume Workshop, Learn to solder, Drone aerial photography, Air Rockets, Battleship Pond, Kids Design Games (Vista Charter School),Tiny Dog Houses, San Diego Star Wars Society, Light Painting Stick, and Ectotherms in Art (EcoVivatrium) with their cold blooded Animal Ambassadors.

The West Coast Clock and Watch Museum recently relocated to the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum from Bellingham, Washington. It can be found in one of the back rooms of the Assembly building. You won’t be prepared for what you will see in that back room. Many of the clocks are one of a kind from the 1800’s.

The AGSEM is a working museum with many of the exhibits operational. The museum is Celebrating 40 Years in Vista and the 25th Anniversary of Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club! The AGSEM had many components like the Palomar Handweavers Guild at AGSEM. The Guild was founded in 1952 and has a rich tradition of its members producing beautiful clothing, accessories, rugs and household items which have won numerous awards.

Then there is the Short Track Railroad which began operation in 1992. it started as an NTRAK club and it travelled extensively in Southern California. The Short Track is best known for their annual display at the San Diego County Fair. In 2002 they built a 3,600 sf section house at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum and they now have 3 layouts on display at the section house.
By far the largest exhibit at the AGSEM is the tractors and old farm implements. Hundreds of tractors including numerous rare Steam Engine tractors that still run. One of the steam engine tractors was built in 1902 and is in every parade. The Museum is open daily (excluding Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) and has many special shows throughout the year.

Summergrass is one of my favorite events and at Summergrass 2016 old and new favorites will be welcomed to the stage at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum starting August 19 and continuing through the 21st. Favorite entertainers like the Gibson Brothers, David Parmley & Cardinal Tradition, Chris Henry and the Hardcore Grass, Bluegrass Etc., and Rocky Neck Bluegrass will be appearing on the AGSEM outdoor stage.

A Civil War re-enactment complete with cavalry charges and cannon fire takes place over two days every March, on Sept 10th the AGSEM will hold their annual Family Fun Day, and on Oct. 1st & 2nd the Vista Fiber Arts Festival and the Gem & Mineral show return. Also you won’t want to miss the Out-Door Consignment Auctions occurring on Sunday, November 13th, 2016. In addition to these shows, Vista High School alum holds their famous Woodstock Summer Jam reunion in the campgrounds at the AGSEM every July.

But you’re not too late to enjoy some real family fun because this coming weekend is the second half of the June Antique Engine & Tractor Show. Train rides, Blacksmith demonstrations, and everything else will be there except the Mini Maker Faire that was held for one weekend only.
