Charlie: I recently sprained my ankle and I don’t want it to cause an exercise setback. Should I still exercise if I sprained my ankle?
Megan: Between the first 48 to 72 hours, it is important to ice and elevate and not bear too much weight on the ankle. After that, depending on the severity, you can continue to exercise. You can still do a wide range of exercise including strength training for upper body, core, cardio depending on pressure so seated bike or elliptical can work, swimming, and lying down exercises such as mat pilates or yoga or strength can still be done. Listen to your body and watch for inflammation. Once healed you can return to more lower body adn weight bearing exercises.
